FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below you will find some of the most common questions asked in the office. We hope that you find this information helpful. If you have other questions please feel free to contact the office at 574-826-2200.

Q: What occurs during my first obstetric visit ?
A: Your first obstetrical visit will typically be somewhere between 7 and 10 weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period. A complete physical examination will be performed at this visit. Numerous labs are routinely done including a complete blood count and blood type, screening tests for the German measles or rubella, syphilis, hepatitis, gonorrhea, and Chlamydia. A Pap smear will usually be done unless you have had one within the last six months. Along with these tests, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, strongly recommends an HIV or AIDS test for pregnant women unless you have had one recently. They also recommend cystic fibrosis screening. This visit is typically quite lengthy, so plan on being at our office for 1 hour.

Q: What if I am a self pay patient?
A: The fees and codes for the services that are provided to you are based on the guidelines of the American Medical Association. There are several factors involved when making the decision for the level of services to be billed. Among those deciding factors is whether you are a new patient (not seen within the last three years) or an established patient, the reason for the visit, the amount of time the service takes, the complexity of the medical problems, and whether any additional testing is done.

If you are a self pay patient and need to know the approximate cost of your visit, please ask the receptionist and she will provide you with a worksheet.

Q: How do I receive my lab results?
A: It is important that you receive your lab results. Results are reported in a variety of ways. All results are reported approximately 20 business days or 4 weeks after the test was performed. If you have a follow up appointment your results will be reported and discussed at that visit. If you do not then you should expect either a phone call or a card in the mail with your results. Never assume that you results are normal if you are not contacted. If it has been greater that 2 weeks after your test was performed and you have not been contacted please contact us by calling 574.826.22000 and select the option to speak to the nurse. If you are having a pap smear or a mammogram please complete a results card.

Q: How are my visits billed?
A: We are your healthcare provider and as a courtesy to you we will file your claims to your insurance company. However, it is your responsibility to understand what services are covered under you medical insurance policy. If you have any questions whether a service is covered we urge you to contact your insurance company, before the service is provided. It is essential that you provide us with complete and accurate information. We make every effort to submit your claims to your insurance company and promptly provide you our statements. For a more complete description of our billing policy please refer to the Patient Financial Policy’s.

Please be sure to have your insurance cards with you at every visit so that we may properly bill your insurance carrier. If you do not have your card with you, you will be required to make payment in full that day.

Q: What if the my appointment is running late?
A: Invariably there will be times when our office is running significantly late. Our goal is to have one hour patient cycles. In other words, from the time that you enter the office until the time that you leave, we strive to take no longer than 1 hour. Because babies can be born at any time this is sometimes impossible. You are welcome to reschedule you appointment at any time and we strive to accommodate you the same week. Thank you for your patience.

Q: How do I make a prescription refill request?
A: Prescription refill request should be left on the prescription refill telephone request line. Information requested includes: Name, Telephone Number, Date of Birth, Prescription, Dosage, and Pharmacy Information. All refills requested prior to 3 PM will be filled before the close of business. If you want your prescription changed please leave that information as well.
